Investigation called into labor practices

 demonstration that snarled traffic around City Hall Friday, the Los Angeles City Council voted to ask the Harbor Commission to investigate the claims of port-area truck drivers that port tenants are engaging in unfair labor practices.

Leaders of the Communications Workers of America Communications Workers of America (CWA) is the largest communications and media labor union in the United States (the union also has locals in Canada), representing over 700,000 workers in both the private and public sectors.  union said they are attempting to represent the drivers in a dispute with port tenants that involves how the drivers are compensated.

The union leaders also said some drivers are being given loads of chemicals without the proper truck warning labels.

 that helps feed, house and care for rescued animals, is scheduled on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank.

The event will feature a horse show, a dog show, a wild-west show and a silent auction with items donated by celebrities, according to organizers. Attendees also will have the opportunity to adopt animals.

Admission is $5, with children under 12 and seniors admitted free.

Fire season opens in the Southland

Officials announced the opening of the fire season in Southern California Friday as weather forecasters predicted a warming trend this weekend that is inspected to send inland temperatures above 100 degrees.

Officials from a number of firefighting agencies warned that Friday is the opening of fire season when extra precautions are needed to avert disastrous brush fires.

Fire officials will be inspecting hillsides to make sure brush is cleared 100 feet away from residences.
