Lancaster man dies in daughters' rescue

A 51-year-old Lancaster man died Saturday while trying to save his daughters from a strong rip current at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area in Arroyo Grande, authorities said.

Ex-Riordan adviser named to 9th Circuit

Kim Wardlaw, a federal judge in Los Angeles for the past two years and a former adviser to Mayor Richard Riordan, has been confirmed to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Wardlaw, 44, Friday. President Clinton had nominated her in January.

Wardlaw will begin her new post after completing pending cases.

In addition to being a former Riordan adviser, Wardlaw presided over the mayor's civil wedding earlier this year to longtime companion Nancy Daly.

Her husband, attorney Bill Wardlaw, is Riordan's closest adviser and is part of a private group hoping to woo Democrats to choose Los Angeles for their national convention in 2000.
