BRIEFLY : CHILD HELPS RESCUE BOY FROM DROWNING.

WINNETKA - A young boy nearly drowned in a swimming accident Saturday afternoon but was saved thanks to the quick action of another child and adults at the scene, witnesses said.

The 4-year-old victim was listed in good condition in an observation unit at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles on Saturday evening, said Steve Rutledge, a hospital spokesman.

The boy was face down in the water and not moving at about 3:50 p.m., when an 8-year-old friend saw that he was in trouble, witnesses said.

The older boy turned the child so his face was out of the water, then pulled the 4-year-old to the side of the pool and yelled to nearby parents for help.

The adults then took the younger child out of the pool, and the victim's father performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, fire officials said. Paramedics responded to the scene in the 7600 block of Quakertown Avenue and the boy was airlifted to Childrens Hospital, officials said.

Andre Rainville, the boy who pulled the younger child to the side of the pool, said matter-of-factly that he took the action he did because he thought it was the right thing to do.

``Then I looked to see if he was OK and he was not,'' Andre said.
