An Assembly committee voted Thursday to endorse a watered-down version of a bill intended to crack down on retailers whose checkout scanners overcharge customers.

Lobbyists for the downtown sports arena and the proposed development for Hollywood were among the highest-paid in the city for the first three months of the year, the city Ethics Commission reported Thursday.

Majestic Realty paid more than $99,000 to its team of lobbyists to win approval of the Staples Center project on the site of the North Hall of the Convention Center.

Another ambitious project, to build a commercial and entertainment complex to serve as the home of the Oscars, saw developer TrizecHahn Centers pay $98,000 to its representatives.

Detectives at the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Gangster suspect charged in shooting

VAN NUYS - A suspected gang member was charged with attempted murder Thursday for allegedly shooting at two young men, wounding one of them in the neck, at a Cleveland High School track meet earlier this month.

Lafayette Hudspeth, 22, of Culver City was due to be arraigned in Van Nuys Municipal Court. Bail was recommended at $550,000, said Deputy District Attorney John Morris.

The May 1 shooting at the school was prompted by a dispute between rival gangs, Morris said.

The company started moving its pager clients onto a Galaxy III-R satellite Wednesday, paving the way for pager service to resume, she said.

 pulls biker from forest crash

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  - A motorcyclist who ran off a highway in the Angeles National Forest on Thursday tumbled down a rocky incline and had to be rescued by a county Fire Department crew that hoisted him into a helicopter.

The call came in about 5 p.m. from 14831 Little Tujunga Road, county fire Inspector Henry Rodriguez said.

The victim was alert and was airlifted to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, police officials said.
