BRIEFLY : CHAVEZ FRIEND KILLED BY GUNMAN.

A gunman in Toluca, Mexico, killed a friend of world super-lightweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez, who was helping the boxer prepare for his next title fight.

The victim was Jesus ``Baby'' Gallardo, a middleweight who had retired, but was said by Chavez to be considering a comeback. Jesus Sanchez Angulo, chief spokesman for the state of Mexico, of which Toluca is the capital, also died in the shooting, apparently an innocent bystander, the government news agency Notimex reported.

Notimex said the gunman fired five shots. Three hit Gallardo and one hit Sanchez Angulo in the heart. The gunman fled in a waiting car. No motive was immediately apparent.

FOOTBALL A grand jury decided that there was insufficient evidence to indict two Virginia Tech football players accused of raping a woman in their dormitory room. The finding came following a state police investigation.

The criminal aspect of the case is now closed. But, Antonio Morrison and James Crawford remain defendants in a civil lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke by Christy Brzonkala.

The NFL's Pro Bowl will be televised on network television in prime time next year for the first time. ABC will carry the season-ending all-star game from Honolulu beginning at 8 p.m. EST next Feb. 2.

From 1988 through last January, the Pro Bowl was carried in prime time by ESPN cable. Prior to that, it was on ABC beginning at 6 p.m. EST.

BASKETBALL Dallas Comegys, who was shot outside a nightclub, has been fined by his Turkish basketball club for leaving his hotel during an away game.

``We couldn't tell Comegys yet, because he was fighting for his life, but leaving the club is a really serious violation of team discipline,'' Emin Karagulle, an official of the Istanbul team Fenerbahce, said.

Comegys, the 31-year-old former NBA player, was shot in a dispute in Bursa on April 4 and is recovering from lung surgery. His American teammates Henry Turner and Ricky Winslow escaped uninjured, but were also fined.

OLYMPICS With a little more than three months to go before the opening ceremony, the chief Olympic organizer says all venues are nearly ready and revenues are on target.

``We're putting the finishing touches on our construction,'' Billy Payne, head of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, said. ``We're going to be able to meet and even to exceed the commitments that we made to the rest of the world.''

Payne said ACOG has commitments for more than 91 percent of the $1.7 billion in revenues it needs. He said his group should be able to raise the rest, mostly from ticket sales and other sources, including licensing, coins and concessions. Telephone ticket sales, launched a few weeks ago, are running ahead of expectations, he said, despite reports that callers had trouble getting through to operators.
