BRIEFLY : CHARTER REFORMERS MAY COVER LAUSD.

Gov. Pete Wilson For others named Pete Wilson, see .
Peter Barton Wilson (born August 23, 1933) is an American Republican politician from California. Wilson served as the thirty-sixth Governor of California (1991–1999), the culmination of more than three decades in the public arena that
signed legislation Thursday to allow the board governing the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  to grow as part of the city's charter reform process.

The measure, written by Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg, D-Sherman Oaks, allows a change in the city's charter to include setting aside the board's seven-member limit - a move some see as an important step in making the panel more responsive to the public.

Hertzberg said earlier that he proposed the measure to allow charter reformers to consider ways to better connect the district to the city's operations.

The city has two separate commissions re-examining the city's charter. Neither has proposed a restructuring of the school district so far, but the change in law gives them the ability to do so. Any change in the charter would have to be approved ultimately by voters.
