Michael Chang won his first title of the year Sunday with a straight-sets victory over Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands at the MFS Pro Championships at the Longwood Cricket Club in Brookline, Mass.

Displaying the crisp style and endless hustle that has always made him a crowd favorite, Chang, the fourth seed, won the final match 6-3, 6-4.

It was a sweet victory in a tough year for Chang, one in which his once-high ranking dropped to 22 and he suffered a number of injuries. ``I've tried to keep a positive attitude and keep battling,'' he said.

It was the first singles final of the year for Haarhuis, one of the world's top doubles players.

Patrick Rafter defeated Felix Mantilla of Spain 7-5 (7-3), 6-2 to win the Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y.

The 25-year-old Australian, ranked No. 3 on the ATP Tour and the second seed at the tournament, defeated Mantilla, the eighth seed, for the third time in as many matches to earn $45,000 and 150 ATP points.

TRACK AND FIELD: World record holder Colin Jackson edged world and Olympic champion Allen Johnson in a showdown between the two 110-meter hurdlers in Glasgow, Scotland.

Running into a headwind, Jackson pulled away from Johnson off the last hurdle at the Scotstoun Stadium to cross the line in 13.40 seconds. Johnson, who has beaten Jackson in the major championships over the past four years, placed second in 13.42.

Noureddine Morceli struggled to win the 1,500 meters, an event he used to dominate, at the IAAF Rieti Grand Prix meet in Rieti, Italy. He then announced he would not race again this season.

The Algerian, who has set two world records at this track nestled in the mountains about 35 miles northeast of Rome, failed to put away countryman Miloud Abaoub until the final 100 meters and crossed the line in 3 minutes, 33.58 seconds. Abaoub clocked 3:34.47.

CYCLING: While Germany, Belgium and Spain shared the gold medals, France was the dominant nation at the World Cycling championships in Bordeaux, France. France ended with six gold medals out of 12 events, equaling its total of last year.
