New winery uses earth-friendly ways

BUELLTON - Environmental friendliness is the key at Sanford Winery's new facility, including the use of adobe bricks and recycled timbers from Oregon.

``It's very rewarding to be building from earth,'' owner Richard Sanford said. ``I'm interested in earth structures - it's appropriate technology for where we are. What you see is what it is, rather than being something different.''

Sanford purchased his 485-acre Rancho La Rinconada La Rinconada is a city located in the province of Seville, Spain. According to the 2006 census (INE), the city has a population of 33370 inhabitants. External links

Growers sign pact to protect farmland

SANTA BARBARA - Three Santa Maria Valley growers have signed up for farmland security zone status, a new county program designed to protect agricultural land from development for two decades.

William, Thomas and Andrew Adam were the first to sign up under the newly-adopted plan calling on them to lock up their land in agriculture and avoid development for 20 years.

protection plan now followed. In exchange, growers get an extra 35 percent property tax cut.

William and Thomas Adam own 135 acres and Andrew Adam owns 320 acres west of Santa Maria. They were the only ones to apply by Friday's deadline to take advantage of the program for the next tax year.

``They're the pioneers,'' Santa Barbara County Agricultural Commissioner Bill Gillette said. ``There's not a huge response at this point because others are weighing the pluses and minuses of the 20-year commitment. We're encouraging them to take a good, hard look.''

Farmland security zones enhance the state's Williamson Act, which helps preserve farms by giving owners a tax break on their land.
