SUN VALLEY - Hoping to tackle the high unemployment rate in the northeast San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
, a nonprofit agency has opened a new $2.4 million one-stop career placement center that offers free services to job seekers.

The One-Stop Workforce and Industry Center, the first of its kind in the Northeast Valley, will provide job training, placement and counseling to youths, adults and displaced workers. El Proyecto del Barrio bar·ri·o

Jury dodgers called to court to explain

Some of the people who failed to sign up for jury duty this summer are due in court today to explain why.

About 34,000 people have failed to fill out jury duty forms in the past year, court spokeswoman Jerrianne Hayslett said.

Because of the high unreturned rate of forms, the Los Angeles Superior Court reinstated a Sanctions Summons Program in July, to get potential panelists to take their summonses seriously.

The penalty for not responding to a jury summons can be jail time and up to a $1,500 fine.

Lead testing urged for mug drinkers

People who have been drinking out of certain Save the Children mugs should have their blood tested for high levels of lead, state health officials warned Tuesday.

The lead showed up in tests of two types of the 20-ounce mugs - Popsicle Faces and Here Comes Santa. The mugs are made in China and distributed by Connecticut-based Centrum centrum /cen·trum/ (sen´trum) pl. cen´tra   [L.]

Rock singer posts bail in Ohio fight

The lead singer for the swing band Royal Crown Revue The Royal Crown Revue is a band formed in 1989 in Los Angeles, California. They play modern swing music and are credited with starting the Swing Revival movement.[1][2]  was free on bond Tuesday after allegedly getting into a fight with an off-duty sheriff's officer at an Ohio restaurant.

Edwin Nichols, 32, of Los Angeles, was charged with assault of a police officer, disorderly conduct, assault and resisting arrest.

According to a police report, Nichols became involved in a fight with Daniel Garner, 29, a Lucas County Sheriff's Department deputy.

`Sesame' workshop to be held at CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  

NORTHRIDGE - As part of a 10-campus tour, professionals from the children's TV show ``Sesame Street'' will hold a public workshop Thursday at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , that will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the program works.

The event will be held at Cal State Northridge's Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre.  from 7:30 to 9 p.m. It will include live demonstrations and panel discussions by senior producers, writers and Muppeteers. It is important to note that the workshop is intended for college-age students and adults, and not children.

Van Damme deal taped, lawyer says

An entertainment lawyer testified Tuesday that a martial-arts expert suing Jean-Claude Van Damme for his share of profits from a movie allegedly tape-recorded part of that deal with the actor.

That tape, however, was allegedly lost or destroyed in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, the plaintiff's trial attorney Steven Kramer has indicated.

Michael Frankel represented Frank Dux in negotiations with Nice Tie/Epic Productions to help pen the movie ``Enter the New Dragon: the Kumite'' with the kick-boxing star in 1991.
