Mahony, 62, said he feels ``terrific,'' according to a news release, which also said the appearance of a blood clot after major surgery is not uncommon.

It was unclear when Mahony would be hospitalized or what treatment was expected. Details on the clot also were unavailable, and a phone call to the archdiocese spokesman was not immediately returned.

Mahony, head of the largest Roman Catholic archdiocese in the United States, underwent surgery June 15 after early detection of prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men. . Mahony had resumed his normal duties after recuperating when the clot was discovered.

Teen shot in chest, but walks to get aid

A 19-year-old was shot in the chest in North Hollywood on Saturday night but was able to walk into a nearby Pizza Hut restaurant to ask for help, authorities said.

Polanco resurrects bill on leaf blowers

With the ink barely dry on a Los Angeles ban on gas-powered leaf blowers, a state senator has resurrected a bill that would quash the new law and many such prohibitions in California, including one in Carmel that's been on the books for 23 years.

``It's baa-ack!'' said Bill Mabie, aide to state Sen. Richard Polanco, a Los Angeles Democrat and author of the bill.
