Supervisor seeks jail death inquiry

Burke is asking for Special Counsel Merrick Bobb to conduct the investigation.

Inmate Danny Smith, 34, of Los Angeles, collapsed with his hands cuffed behind his back during an altercation with jail staff. Other inmates claim the staffers beat and choked Smith while he cried out that he couldn't breathe. An autopsy report is pending results of toxicology and other tests.

The Sheriff's Department and the FBI are jointly investigating Smith's death.
