A back spasm which Els said hit him Wednesday night forced his withdrawal as he played his ninth hole of Thursday's first round. The South African called his status for next week's U.S. Open, in which he is also defending champion, a ``day-to-day thing.''

Even if Els was healthy, he would have been hard-pressed to match shots with Sutherland, especially during a sensational back nine on the Westchester Country Club The Westchester Country Club (or Westchester Biltmore Country Club) was founded by John McEntee Bowman, who hired Walter Travis to design two golf courses in Rye, New York as a luxury resort hotel.  course when Sutherland shot a 6-under 29. TENNIS: Despite an easy two-set victory over Wayne Black at the Queen's Club in London, Pete Sampras' first warmup match for Wimbledon was anything but routine.

The top seed, playing his first match since losing in the second round of the French Open, won 6-2, 6-3 on a windy, wet day with autumn-like conditions making play treacherous.

``It is slippery and you've got to be a little bit careful,'' Sampras said. ``It is dangerous. Your foot could get stuck or you could slip, and it's very easy to twist an ankle out there.

U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter, continuing a match suspended from Wednesday, lost 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to fellow Australian Scott Draper.

Steffi Graf took just one hour to beat Kristie Boogert 6-2, 6-4 and advance to the quarterfinals of the DFS Classic in Birmingham, England.

Graf is playing in only her third tournament since knee surgery a year ago. She is preparing for Wimbledon, a tournament she has won seven times.
