BRIEFLY : AUTRY NAME CLOSER FOR FREEWAY JUNCTION.

The state Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill Wednesday to rename the Golden State and Ventura freeways junction the Gene Autry Memorial Interchange.

``Gene Autry represents the best of popular movies and television, a very simple man who was true to himself and sought to portray the values we all admire in his life and work,'' said the bill's author, Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena.

The full Senate now must approve the measure. The interchange leads to the Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Griffith Park.

Autry's career as a television cowboy spanned more than 60 years. He is the only entertainer with five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Autry also owned several businesses, including the Angels baseball team.
