Author and illustrator Karen B. Winnick was nominated Wednesday by Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  to serve as a zoo commissioner.

Winnick has written such children's books as ``Mr. Lincoln's Whiskers See metal whiskers. ,'' ``Sandro's Dolphin'' and ``Patch and the Strings.'' Her fourth book, ``Sybil's Night Ride,'' is due to be published next year.

Winnick is nominated for a term ending in 2004 to replace outgoing commissioner David Bruyette.

Interim official gets permanent position

George T. Rakis, interim general manager of the Los Angeles Convention Center The Los Angeles Convention Center (abbreviated LACC) is a convention center in downtown Los Angeles. The LACC hosts annual events such as the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, and was best known to video games fans as host to E3 until its cessation in 2006.  Department, was appointed by Mayor Richard Riordan to fill the position permanently.

Rakis is responsible for management and operation of the center and oversees 175 full-time and about 450 part-time employees.

Ten cited for sales of alcohol to minors

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - A weekend undercover sting aimed at curbing the sale of alcohol to minors ended with 10 citations, Ventura County sheriff's officials said Sunday.

As part of an ongoing effort, deputies sent teen-agers into 80 restaurants, drug and liquor stores in the Conejo Valley on Friday and Saturday nights, according to Senior Deputy Brian Richmond of the sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail.

The sting was timed to coincide with the end of summer vacation and the start of the school year.

In June, a similar undercover sting ended with liquor being sold to 20 minors. Sheriff's officials said the operations have shown the stings are effective in curbing illegal sales of alcohol.

Road rage results in 2 drivers' arrests

THOUSAND OAKS - Two motorists placed each other under citizen's arrest late Saturday after a roadside brawl that officials say started from road rage.

Authorities said King was aboard his Honda motorcycle at a stoplight on Lindero Canyon Road when he had trouble putting the motorcycle into first gear. Walsh, who was driving a black Mercedes-Benz, started honking at King until he got his motorcycle into gear.

When Walsh continued to honk after passing King, the two pulled over onto Rocksfield Street, near Lindero Canyon Road. King allegedly greeted Walsh with a punch to the chin.

Walsh responded by kicking King into his motorcycle and punching him when he got up, sheriff's officials said.
