Monica Seles overcame Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in Sunday's championship match of Tokyo's Toyota Princess Cup 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

It was the third year in a row that the American beat the Spaniard in the Tokyo final.

In Davis Cup play in Milwaukee, the U.S. split the meaningless last two singles matches with Italy, which won the semifinal round 4-1. Jan-Michael Gambill salvaged a victory over Davide Sanguinetti (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) in the fifth and final match. Justin Gimelstob lost to Italy's Gianluca Pozzi 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

GOLF: Hal Sutton won a three-way battle on the back nine of the Texas Open in San Antonio for his first PGA Tour victory since 1995. Justin Leonard lost the lead by bogeying the final two holes.

Sutton, who led by one stroke entering the final round, had six birdies and two bogeys in a 4-under-par 68. He held on to par the final two holes and finish with an 18-under 270 total, one stroke ahead of Leonard, who crumbled, and Jay Haas, who couldn't make a birdie. Leonard and Haas each shot a 68.

Aussie Rachel Hetherington and two-time defending champion Annika Sorenstam both closed their rounds with four consecutive birdies, then Hetherington made another on the first playoff hole to win the LPGA Betsy King Classic in Kutztown, Pa.

Larry Nelson won the Boone Valley Senior Golf Classic in Augusta, Mo., by two strokes, withstanding a charge in which Graham Marsh eagled two of the last five holes.

Colin Montgomerie sank a 6-foot par putt at the 18th hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory in the German Masters in Cologne. The Scotsman also became Europe's leading money-winner.

ETC.: Grant Hackett sliced more than six seconds off Kieren Perkins' world short-course swimming record in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the Australian championships in Perth. Hackett went out fast in the first 500 meters and finished in 14 minutes, 19.55 seconds. . . . Tear gas tossed into the stands during an Italian League game stung the eyes of players and forced hundreds of fans to leave at halftime in Perugia. Police clashed with some of the 2,500 visiting Lazio fans late in the first half. Hundreds among the 20,000 fans left Renato Curi Stadium at halftime, complaining they could not see, the ANSA news agency reported.
