BRIEFLY : AS MANY AS 6 HURT IN SERIES OF SHOOTINGS.


As many as six people were shot Wednesday, including four who were critically wounded, in a series of shootings near Florence and Normandie avenues, fire officials said.

The shootings occurred about 9:15 p.m. near a liquor store and gas station at the intersection that was the flash point of the 1992 Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  riots, officials said.

Police suspect gang in slaying in Sunland

SUNLAND - A man was killed Wednesday in what appeared to a gang-related shooting in Sunland, police said.

The man was shot about 10:10 p.m. in the 10600 block of Leolang Avenue, said Sgt. Don Lawrence of the Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill Division.

Robbery was being investigated as a possible motive, Lawrence said, and two suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot.

Monfaredi befriended the woman when he worked at a service station near her home in Newhall, police said.

The woman got the idea that her young friend was Jesus, and she wanted to help him help the poor, Campbell said.

Eventually Monfaredi moved into her home and took her to Las Vegas to get married, officials said.

Monfaredi allegedly hit the woman on the head and in the face with a bottle, authorities said.

Man in custody after stabbing, police say

SYLMAR - A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed his wife during an argument, police said Wednesday.

The alleged attack occurred about 1 a.m. in the 12800 block of Cape Cottage Lane, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Don Lawrence of the Foothill Division.

Police identified the suspect as Alcalmedes Abellera.

Lawrence said the woman, whose name was withheld, was hospitalized in stable condition.
