Chinese Cultural Association hope to move closer to their longstanding dream of having a Chinese Heritage Center as they hold their annual fund-raising banquet tonight at the Universal Hilton in Universal City.

The social hour starts at 6:15 p.m., and an eight-course traditional Chinese dinner begins at 7:15 p.m.

The association's 600 families have been working on building the community headquarters of their dreams to house a Chinese school and more. Through a series of benefits held since 1995, the association has raised about $130,000 toward its goal of $500,000 to build a $6 million complex.

The Chinese Heritage Center would offer classes to the public in such areas as language and arts for youth and adults, and would house offices and a Chinese library.

At tonight's event, Stewart Kwoh, president of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center for Southern California, will be honored for his work on civil rights. Community activists Mario Machado and Rosana Chao, longtime supporters of local charities and founders of the Chao Foundation, also will be honored for their contributions to the community.

Tickets start at $100 each. For tickets, call Jack Chen, chairman of the Chinese Heritage Foundation, at (213) 263-6177 or T.P. Lin at (818) 886-8812.
