BRIEFLY : AGED GORILLA FOUND DEAD AT L.A. ZOO.


Chris, a 33-year-old male silverback lowland gorilla, was found dead Friday in the room he slept in at the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.

 Jennifer Chatfield found the gorilla about 9 a.m.

``He appeared to be sleeping on his side with his arms folded like he normally does,'' Chatfield said.

Chatfield said she called veterinarians, who confirmed the primate was dead.

Zoo spokeswoman Laura LaMarca said an examination of the body revealed that the aged gorilla had heart disease and died of congestive heart failure congestive heart failure, inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time. .

Water main flush set for Van Nuys

The Department of Water and Power will flush accumulated sediment from water mains in central Van Nuys beginning Monday, which may affect water quality in some homes.

The project, expected to continue through May 9, will remove sediment from pipes built up from years of use, said Councilman Marvin Braude. Residents may see a decrease in water pressure, Braude said.
