BRIEFLY : 83-YEAR-OLD MAN DROWNS IN OWN POOL.


STUDIO CITY - A woman awoke from a nap in her Studio City home Thursday to find her husband dead in a backyard swimming pool.

Around 5:30 p.m., the woman found her 83-year-old husband floating in the deep end of the pool at 11828 Sunshine Terrace, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  City Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

Heart attack apparent cause of fatal crash

SUN VALLEY - A 91-year-old motorist was killed and his wife left in critical condition Thursday when a heart attack apparently caused the man to lose control of his car, police said.

The Sun Valley residents, were heading west in the 9900 block of Sunland Boulevard around 3 p.m. Their Ford Escort Over the years, the name 'Ford Escort' has been used for several models.

Driver Charles Pratt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics took his wife, 81-year-old Betty Pratt, to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is a hospital in Mission Hills, California, USA. The hospital has 254 beds, and is part of Providence Health & Services. History  in Mission Hills, where she was listed in critical condition, Henry said.

Crime prevention meeting planned

Director and actor Rob Reiner, District Attorney Gil Garcetti, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Attorney General Bill Lockyer got together in person and by phone Thursday to plan a children's crime prevention summit.

The meeting Lockyer joined by telephone was held in Garcetti's office in the Criminal Courts Building downtown.

Reiner spent millions of his own money to help get Proposition 10, a 50- cent-a-pack tax on cigarettes, passed. The money it raised is earmarked for early childhood development programs.

Asbestos removal will close school

Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  officials did not say where the asbestos was found on the campus at 15777 Bowdoin St., only that inspectors with the Environmental Health and Safety Branch found a ``potential for asbestos exposure.''

Asbestos fibers can contribute to cancer and other respiratory ailments.

Contractors will work through the weekend to remove the asbestos. It was not clear when the school would reopen.
