MARTINEZ, Calif. - With a slight smile and a quiet, ``I can live with it,'' a mother whose 13-year-old daughter died weighing 680 pounds was convicted Friday of misdemeanor child abuse.

Pair of gunmen rob Chatsworth store

CHATSWORTH - A clerk at a check-cashing store was bound and gagged Friday by two armed robbers who escaped with $15,000, police said.

The robbery occurred shortly before 10 a.m. when the suspects entered Cash for Checks 2 at 20867 Lassen St. and bound and gagged a female clerk, Sgt. Dennis Feeley said.

``They took everything,'' said Soofia Ahmed, whose husband owns the business.

The men were armed with small-caliber handguns, Feeley said. The victim was not physically hurt.

Former official gets 15 days for bribery

A former county Chief Administrative Office manager was sentenced Friday to 15 days in jail for soliciting bribes from vendors who provided him gifts and free meals to protect their county contracts.

Rudy Alvarez, 48, must also stay on probation for three years, perform 500 hours of community service and pay nearly $6,500 in restitution, according to according to

Business owners hail Valley leaders

VAN NUYS - The United Chambers of Commerce of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

 on Friday honored Assemblymen Robert Hertzberg Robert Myles Hertzberg was born on November 19, 1954 in Los Angeles, California, was an attorney and businessperson, and served in the California State Assembly from 1996-2002.  and Tom McClintock Thomas Miller "Tom" McClintock (born July 10, 1956 in White Plains, New York) is a California State Senator. He ran for Governor of California in the 2003 California recall election of Gray Davis and finished third out of 135 candidates with 13.5% of the overall vote. , three businesses and other individuals at the 22nd Annual Recognition and Installation dinner at the Airtel Hotel.

Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, and McClintock, R-Granada Hills, were given awards for their efforts in providing assistance to small businesses, while Jane and Bert Boeckmann won awards for helping small businesses succeed in the Valley.

The United Chambers of Commerce is an umbrella organization representing 23 chambers of commerce in the Valley. The individual chambers represent 8,000 businesses.

The President's Award went to Ross Hopkins of Chatsworth, who served as chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee for UCC An abbreviation for the Uniform Commercial Code.  last year and will be the new executive vice president for 1998.

Additionally, Daily News Publisher Larry Beasley and Managing Editor Ron Kaye were recognized for providing a ``keystone of communication'' for the Valley.

Area alumni among top students in U.S.

Four North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  graduates, who ranked among the top 10 National Scholars the past school year, were honored Friday in Sacramento during a state Board of Education meeting.

George Lee, Howard Chong and Manish Singh, who all attend UC Berkeley, and Carmel Levitan, who attends Stanford University, made up the largest group of National Scholars from one state.

The ranking is based on test results in the College Board's Advanced Placement Program, which allows high school students to take college-level courses and to receive credit or advanced placement in college.

The four students attended the North Hollywood Highly Gifted Center.
