Sherman Oaks home invaded by truck

SHERMAN OAKS - Residents of a Sherman Oaks home got a scare but were uninjured when a driver lost control of a truck and crashed into their home, a police officer said.

The man, who suffered minor injuries, was driving a 1994 Chevy Blazer west on Magnolia Boulevard when the crash occurred about 9:10 p.m. Saturday, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Officer C. Silber.

He was trying to make a right turn onto Sylmar Avenue, lost control of the truck, smashed through a wall and ended up 16 feet inside the home, Silber said.

It was not immediately known how fast the man was driving or why he lost control of the truck.

Seat belts were being used and the air bag in the Expedition deployed, officials said.

Contest to award cell-phone heroes

AirTouch Cellular Southern California is kicking off its Wireless Heroes program with a contest that will honor a person who has used a wireless phone to help someone.

The contest, which will run until the end of the month, will select winners based on the most compelling use and explanation of having helped someone by using a wireless phone to call authorities.

The contest is open to anyone who used a wireless phone to reach out to a fellow citizen in need, assist a person or animal in distress, report an emergency situation or crime in progress, or who has been a hero to family, friends or business associates. The situations must have taken place between July 1997 and July 1998.

The winner will receive a Nokia 2180 digital phone and 12 months of free AirTouch digital service. Runners up will be awarded free airtime certificates.
