The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Lake View Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd. Among the topics scheduled to be discussed is the future of a proposed golf course in the Tujunga Wash area.

 helicopter made an emergency landing Monday at Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  after the pilot sensed engine trouble, officials said.

The aircraft, with a pilot and technical flight officer aboard, landed safely about 2 a.m., said police Lt. Keith Johnson of the Air Support Division.

``He made a precautionary landing because he believed he momentarily lost'' hydraulic control, Johnson said.

The cause of the malfunction was not immediately identified, he said.

Campus finishes up voting on new name

Birmingham High School Birmingham High School is a public coeducational high school in the neighborhood/district of Lake Balboa in the San Fernando Valley section of the city of Los Angeles, California. The school is a part of District One of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).  students finished voting Monday on a new school mascot but administrators do not plan to announce the results until Wednesday.

About 500 of the school's 3,000 students cast ballots Friday and Monday, said math teacher and tennis coach Rick Prizant, a vote coordinator.

Prizant said many students boycotted the vote because they want to remain the Birmingham Braves, a nickname that was banned after the Los Angeles Unified School District found it to be a racial stereotype offensive to American Indians. A federal judge upheld the district's decision to change the name.

Students had a choice of four names: Buccaneers Buccaneers can refer to:
  • Buccaneers Rugby Club: A semi-professional rugby union team based in Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, founded in 1976, still exist
  • The Los Angeles Buccaneers played only in the 1926 season

Nine area children named to orchestra

Nine local students were among 84 young musicians from across the United States and England to be named to the 1998 Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.

The children will perform live at Chicago's Ravinia Festival on July 3.

The local children are YeJin Kim, 10, of La Crescenta; Yumi Man, 10, of La Crescenta; Sharon Park, 11, of Northridge; Jean Yeh, 10, of Westlake Village; Kendahl Feldman, 12, of Newhall; Teresa Liu, 12, of Northridge; Natalie Bonifede, 11, of Agoura; Avi Bialo, 12, of Calabasas; and Danielle Goren-Hill, 10, of Encino.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Monday announced the resignation of Ellen Levine, executive officer for Transit Operations, effective June 27.

Levine, 52, has worked for the MTA and its predecessor agency for 18 years in seven positions and has been in her present job since October 1996.

Levine, who is responsible for 6,000 MTA employees, 2,100 buses and 100 rail cars carrying 350 million passengers a year, said she was asked but declined to stay on in a different capacity.

San Fernando Valley residents will have a chance tonight to tell the Los Angeles Police Commission what they think of police services when the panel holds a special meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Reseda High School Reseda High School, established in 1955, is located in the Reseda section of Los Angeles, California, United States.

The current principal of Reseda High is Alfredo Tarin. The mascot of Reseda High is the Regent, a lion welding a crown and a scepter.

Woman arraigned in insurance fraud

A Tarzana woman accused of defrauding insurance companies at her Sherman Oaks acupuncture clinic was arraigned Monday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Miriam Yedvab, 49, was charged last week with one count of mail fraud. She is accused of billing insurance companies for services at the Alpha Acupuncture Clinic, some of which were never performed, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Weiss.

Weiss said the clinic, owned and operated by Yedvab, catered to the entertainment industry. Yedvab faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
