Grenade proven dud after street closing

WOODLAND HILLS - Police shut down a part of Oxnard Street for nearly an hour Saturday while they investigated the report of hand grenade in the back of a pickup truck.

But police were relieved to find that the grenade was nothing more than a harmless prop.

``People get these at surplus stores or curios. It was inert, drilled out, like a paperweight,'' said Sgt. Al White of Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Division.

``The driver was pretty embarrassed.''

The truck had been parked near the intersection of Oxnard Street and Variel Avenue.
