BRIEFLY : 11 LEFT HOMELESS AFTER FIRE ERUPTS.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Eleven people, including seven children, were left without a home early Friday morning after flames engulfed a two-story dwelling in North Hollywood, a Fire Department spokesman said.

No one was injured when the fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. at the apartment complex, in the 11100 block of Cohasset Street, said city fire spokesman Brian Humphrey.

It took 30 firefighters nearly half an hour to extinguish the blaze, which caused an estimated $65,000 damage to the house and its contents, Humphrey said.

The cause of the fire was listed as suspicious.

Some library sites to increase hours

To meet community needs, public library operating hours at selected branches will increase.

To kick off the extended hours, a free Family Festival is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the West Valley Regional Branch, 19036 Vanowen St., Reseda.

The new schedule will expand public service hours from 50 to 60 hours per week at regional branches and from 40 to 52 hours at community branches.

City Librarian Susan Kent said extended hours at some branches have resulted in a 300 percent increase in usage.

Kent said the extended hours will meet increasing demands for more services and will allow opportunities for families to use facilities in the evenings and on Sundays.
