Man guilty in death of woman in chase

A Hollywood man who led police on a high-speed chase that resulted in a Granada Hills woman's death last year was convicted of second-degree murder Friday after a weeklong jury trial.

Christopher Dehuff, 20, faces a maximum prison sentence of 21 years to life for his role in the death of Linda Wageman, 44, who burned to death in her van after a collision with Dehuff's stolen van Oct. 14, 1997.

The vehicles collided after Dehuff sped through a red light at Lassen Street and Sepulveda Boulevard in North Hills while trying to evade two motorcycle officers.

Area beaches flunk weekly report card

Surfrider Beach, the Las Flores Canyon Creek entrance, Santa Monica Beach at Arizona Avenue and Strand Street, the Ashland Avenue Storm Drain and Will Rogers State Beach at Malibu Canyon are all unsafe for swimming, according to Heal the Bay's weekly beach report card.

The environmental group grades Los Angeles beaches on levels of bacteria that can cause respiratory, skin or stomach ailments. Those beaches received grades of F, indicating the highest bacteria counts.

Malibu Pier, Santa Monica Municipal Pier and Santa Monica Beach at the Pico Boulevard storm drain received grades of D, which indicate unsafe bacteria levels.

Police don't target gays, Parks says

 said Friday he opposes a request by the gay community to set up a special independent commission to probe allegations that police officers are selectively enforcing laws against homosexuals.

Parks is recommending that the Police Commission reject the proposal when it is considered Tuesday. A petition by the Gay and Lesbian Action Alliance proposes creation of an Independent Commission on Selective and Prejudicial Enforcement to review complaints that gays and lesbians have been singled out for enforcement of lewd-conduct and cruising laws.

``All of these issues have been addressed by the LAPD in-depth in the past,'' Parks wrote to the commission. ``The LAPD is committed to equal and fair law enforcement and treatment for all facets of the communities we serve.''
