PANORAMA CITY - Thirteen California Lottery players from across the state won a total of $257,500 on ``The Big Spin'' show that aired Saturday.

Gabriel Portugal from Canyon Country won a $65,000 prize from the ``Fantasy 5 Dream Machine.''

``I'm going to invest my prize money,'' said Portugal, who bought his ticket at Arco Gas & Minimart in Panorama City.

Early a.m. quake near Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD - A magnitude-4.3 earthquake rattled rural Kern County early Saturday. There were no reports of damage or injuries, officials said.

The temblor was reported at 4:43 a.m. and was centered 11 miles west of Wheeler Ridge, according to according to

Protesters meet at mayor's house

SAN PEDRO - Animal-rights activists held a noisy but peaceful protest Saturday outside the San Pedro home of Mayor James Hahn.

Organizers said the aim of the demonstration was to ``bring the plight of the city's shelter animals to the attention of Hahn's neighbors.''

About 35 activists with the Animal Defense League assembled at 11 a.m. at the mayor's house to protest the city's animal euthanasia policies, said Sgt. S. Engedal of the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division.

Six police officers kept an eye on the demonstration, which ended about 12:30 p.m., he said.

Hahn did not come out of his house, the sergeant said.

Injured suspect demands a ride

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - A shooting suspect from a robbery gone wrong carjacked family members Saturday night as they were pulling into the driveway of their home in North Hollywood, police said.

The armed man, apparently trying to escape the scene of a robbery and shooting, pulled a woman from the car in the 11500 block of Haynes Street about 5:40 p.m. and demanded a ride to the Costco in Burbank, police said.

Once there, the man fled on foot.

Investigators were searching for the suspect, described as a Latino male 35 to 40 years old, in connection with the carjacking The criminal taking of a motor vehicle from its driver by force, violence, or intimidation.

The u.s. justice department categorizes the crime of carjacking as a "completed or attempted Robbery of a motor vehicle by a stranger
 as well as the earlier shooting, which injured an unidentified 30-year-old Latino man.

The shooting victim was being treated for a non-life threatening injury.

Several are hurt in crash on Sunset

BEVERLY HILLS - Several people were injured Saturday night when at least three vehicles crashed on Sunset Boulevard, causing officers to close part of street, police said.

The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Hillcrest Road, said Lt. Tim West of the Beverly Hills Police Department.
