Tax hike pushed for autumn ballot

VENTURA - The Ventura County Transportation Commission voted Friday to ask county supervisors to place a half-cent sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  measure on the November ballot to raise money for road improvements.

The commission voted 5 to 1 to go forward with the measure, with county Supervisor Linda Parks voting against the proposal. Commissioner Steve Bennett was absent.

The tax would raise an estimated $48 million per year for 30 years to pay for road improvements and public transportation.

Widening projects on Highways 101 and 23 and on the Ronald Reagan Freeway that have been delayed for years by state budget cuts could begin within six months of the measure's passage, transportation officials said.

Bilingual issues workshops today

A series of free bilingual workshops on issues from immigrant and tenant rights to art therapy is being held today at Fulton Middle School Fulton Middle School is a school in Fountain Valley, California, in the US, serving grades 6-8.

Man found fatally shot near hospital

A tanker truck driver was found shot to death in Willowbrook on Friday after he called his dispatcher Software that determines what pending tasks should be done next and assigns the available resources to accomplish it. Jury urges death for convicted man

A jury Friday recommended that a man be sentenced to death for the strangulation-arson murders of a business rival and three of her family members at their Hollywood Hills home.

The panel of nine men and three women spent about three days considering whether Virendra ``Victor'' Govin, 37, of Studio City should be sent to Death Row or spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The one-time aspiring police officer is scheduled to be formally sentenced Sept. 23 by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy- Powell.
