BRIEFLY $23,000 RAISED IN 'LOCKUP' EVENT.


WESTLAKE VILLAGE - The local Muscular Dystrophy Association The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is an organization founded in 1950 which combats muscular dystrophy and diseases of the nervous system and muscular system in general by funding research, providing medical and community services, and educating health professionals  raised $23,000 during Wednesday's ``lockup'' of local residents and community leaders who then worked the phones to raise ``bail'' for their release.

Held for the second year at the Westlake Village Inn, the event drew about 40 residents who agreed to be fitted in a jail-striped shirt, handcuffed and placed behind bars.

Screening offered for osteoporosis

The California Osteoporosis Institute will provide discounted health screenings this weekend at local shopping centers shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into .

For $30 - compared to normal costs of $75 to $220 - individuals can be screened to detect early signs fo osteoporosis, a disorder characterized by a reduction in bone density and increased brittleness.

Though most commonly associated with women who have passed menopause menopause (mĕn`əpôz) or climacteric (klīmăk`tərĭk, klī'măktĕr`ĭk) , osteoporosis affects both men and women, officials said.

The screenings will be available from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today at the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Sav-on Drugs, 2825 Cochran St.

Officers honored during ceremony

SIMI VALLEY - The Police Department welcomed its newest officer and honored several other veteran officers at ceremonies this week.

Department officials swore in Officer Catherine Woodruff, who comes from the Port Hueneme Port Hueneme (wī'nē`mē), city (1990 pop. 20,319), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1870, inc. 1948. It has an artificial deep-sea harbor and is the site of a huge naval construction-battalion (Seabee) center.  Police Department.

The department also honored Detective Sgt. Ron Chambers for 15 years of service; Officers Arnold Baynard and Jeff Dominick for 10 years of service; and Community Services Specialist Tom Garcia and Police Service Assistant John Stires for five years of service.

Officials also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Ricky and Ritchie Fuller, who helped police apprehend an individual suspected of defacing property at Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura. .
