Sylmar library dedicated today

SYLMAR - The new Sylmar Branch Library will be dedicated at 10 a.m. today after a nearly two-year project that doubled its size and added new technologies.

L.A. to forgo suit if Ahmanson sold

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  lent its voice Friday to efforts to have the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  purchase the Ahmanson Ranch property to create open space.

At the urging of Councilman Dennis Zine, whose district abuts the project, the council voted 15-0 to drop its threatened lawsuit if the property is sold to the conservancy.

The project envisions 3,000 homes and more than 500,000 square feet of office space, a resort hotel and two golf courses. Los Angeles officials had opposed the project because of the traffic it would generate and the higher costs for the city with no income from it.

Greuel, councils set cleanup day

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel and members of neighborhood councils in her district will hold a community cleanup at 10 a.m. today.

The volunteers will meet at the Robinsons-May parking lot, 6160 Laurel Canyon Blvd., and spread out in teams to spot abandoned cars and identify areas where work is needed to fill potholes and paint over graffiti.

VAN NUYS - The MTA's San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 Service Sector Council heard from nearly 20 bus riders and supporters who spoke out against proposed cuts to three Valley area bus lines, officials said.

The Wednesday night meeting drew widespread opposition to the cuts, part of a systemwide attempt to trim $3 million from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's budget. The council will vote on the issue at its October meeting.
