In Scotland it would have been a nice day. In the home of golf they'd play in weather like this because it might be as good as it gets.

And on all but one of the 54 holes of the three courses used for the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am they could have played golf on Sunday. But that one flooded hole was enough to wash out the tournament entirely.

For the second consecutive day play was called off because of wet grounds and this time it ended the tournament.

With only 36 holes finished and the players not having completed the three-course rotation, the tournament was not official.

It was the first time since the 1949 Colonial National Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas that a PGA Tour event was canceled and not rescheduled.

"The forecast is not any better for tomorrow than today," said David Eger, PGA Tour vice president for competition. "There is no 1996 champion."

Eger said Nos. 11 and 16 at Spyglass Hill "were unplayable yesterday and this morning. If you can't play it, you can't play."

But the real problem was No. 16.

"There were pockets on 11 we could play but there were pockets on 16 we could not play without putting players in the woods," Eger said.

Bob Murphy, withstanding 30-mph gusts and a winter chill, shot a 4-under-par 67 for a four-stroke victory in the Royal Caribbean Classic in Key Biscayne, Fla., the year's first full-field Senior PGA tournament.

TENNIS

Seventh-seeded Iva Majoli of Croatia defeated Spaniard Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win the $926,250 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Majoli, ranked eighth in the world, downed world No. 3 Sanchez Vicario 6-4, 6-1. It was the 18-year-old Majoli's third career victory.

Cheered on by the home crowd, top-seeded Goran Ivanisevic won the first Croatian Indoors tournament by downing Cedric Pioline of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Zagreb.

South African driver Wayne Taylor, who now makes his home in Altamonte Springs, Fla., drove an Oldsmobile Mark III in concert with Americans Scott Sharp and Jim Pace to victory at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Stock car driver Mike Cooke, 49, died hours after his Chevrolet Lumina hit a wall as he was about to start his qualifying attempt for a NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour event at Phoenix International Raceway.
