Jenny Spangler, unknown and overlooked by even her closest competitors, scored a shocking victory in the U.S. women's Olympic marathon trials Saturday in Columbia, S.C.

Sentimental favorite Joan Benoit Joan Benoit Samuelson (born May 16, 1957) is an American former marathon runner who won gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the year that the women's marathon was introduced. As a result she was the first ever women's Olympic marathon champion.  Samuelson finished 13th.

Joining the unheralded Spangler on the team that will compete against the world's best long-distance runners at the Atlanta Games were Linda Somers, the 1993 and 1994 U.S. marathon champion, and Anne Marie Lauck Anne Marie Lauck (born March 7, 1969 in Rochester, New York) is an American long-distance runner who competed in the Summer Olympics in 1996 (10th place in marathon) and 2000 (5000m).

Lauck attended North Hunterdon High School in Clinton Township, New Jersey.

"I didn't know who she was," the surprised Lauck said of the winner, who had run her best marathon 13 years ago. "I heard the name before, but honestly, I did not know who she was."
