An ex-convict was convicted in Lumberton, N.C., Thursday of murdering Michael Jordan's father during a holdup as he awoke from a nap along a dark highway in his $40,000 luxury car.

Daniel Green, 21, could get the death penalty in the 1993 shooting of James Jordan, the 57-year-old father of the basketball great.

According to testimony, Green and his accomplice, Larry Martin Demery, 20, drove Jordan's red Lexus for four days after the slaying. He picked up dates and used the dead man's cellular phone to call friends and relatives.

Green also made a video of himself dancing and rapping while wearing Jordan's jewelry - a watch and two NBA rings given to the elder Jordan by the Chicago Bulls star.

Demery himself was the prosecution's star witness. He pleaded guilty to murder before testifying against Green and also could get the death penalty.

The state of Oregon has agreed to pay $400,000 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Thelma Lillard, mother of Oregon State basketball player Ernest Killum.

Killum suffered an acute stroke after playing in a game at USC. He died Jan. 20, 1992.

Killum had suffered a stroke 13 months earlier while participating in a summer playground game at his home in Los Angeles. He was cleared to play with the Beavers just three weeks before the game against USC.

Natrone Means, who led San Diego to its first Super Bowl two seasons ago, was released in a startling move that allowed the Chargers to sign Miami defensive end Marco Coleman to an offer sheet.

Means rushed for a team-record 1,350 yards in 1994 when the Chargers went on to the NFL title game, losing to San Francisco. But he held out of training camp last summer in a salary dispute, then missed most of the last half of the season with a groin injury.

The Oakland Raiders, who successfully sued the NFL for blocking their move to Los Angeles, are back in court accusing the league of sabotaging their attempt to stay there.

The Raiders sued the league, commissioner Paul Tagliabue and several teams for $200 million Wednesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court, saying they were forced out of the lucrative Los Angeles market and back to Oakland last year because their negotiations were undermined.

Chad Davis ended Washington State's quarterback controversy by withdrawing from school to enter the NFL draft. The team was divided last season over whether Davis or redshirt freshman Ryan Leaf should be the starter.

Lee Janzen made nine birdies in 11 holes and shot a 63 in the first round of the Doral-Ryder Open in Miami for a one-stroke lead over Michael Bradley and two better than Curt Byrum.

In her first race after winning the World Championship downhill title, Picabo Street of the United States produced a daring second run in a rare, two-leg "sprint downhill" to claim her third World Cup victory of the season, in Narvik, Norway. The performance moved her close to retaining the World Cup downhill title.

The leading scorer and leading rebounder for the Arkansas basketball team are no longer eligible to play for the university because of problems with their junior college transcripts. Sunday Adebayo and Jesse Pate can transfer to another school and play basketball next year. Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles said the university failed in its appeal to the NCAA.
