BRIEFLY; TWO PLEAD GUILTY TO STEALING FUNDS.


A Chatsworth couple accused of stealing from a multimillionaire's estate pleaded guilty Friday to four criminal charges.

Isabel F. Bernstein, who worked as bookkeeper for aging businessman Harry Popkin until his death in 1991, is expected to be sentenced Sept. 12 to three years in prison.

Her husband, Paul Bernstein, is expected to receive a suspended five- year prison term and eight years of probation.

The two also are expected to be sentenced to pay restitution of about $400,000, including $100,000 to Popkin's estate and $300,000 to several state agencies.

POLITICIANS CITED IN DEMONSTRATIONS

Four state Assembly members were among dozens of people cited Friday for blocking a Westwood intersection during a massive march with striking janitors.

Police issued 35 citations for failure to disperse after some of the estimated crowd of 2,000 janitors and supporters sat down at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards.

The sit-down was planned by the Service Employees International Union Local 1877 in order to pressure cleaning contractors to meet wage demands, said Blanca Gallegos, a union spokeswoman.
