COUNTY PAID FOR AIR CRASH RECOVERY

VENTURA - Alaska Airlines Alaska Airlines, (NYSE: ALK) is an airline based in Seattle, Washington, United States. It operates hubs at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Portland International Airport.  has reimbursed Ventura County nearly $200,000 for costs incurred during recovery efforts of Flight 261 that crashed in the Pacific Ocean earlier this year killing all 88 on board, the Sheriff's Department said Monday.

The airline paid the county $199,497.45 for expenses incurred by Sheriff's Department and other agencies - the bulk of the emergency response costs, said Sheriff's department spokesman Eric Nishimoto, adding the airline responded quickly to the county's request made earlier this month.

TOBACCO FIRMS TRY TO REVERSE VERDICT

Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds asked a judge in San Francisco on Monday to throw out a jury's $21.7 million damage award to a dying ex-smoker from Ojai, arguing that she should have paid attention to the warning labels on cigarette packages.

TRIAL ORDERED IN WOMAN'S DEATH

SAN FERNANDO - A Van Nuys plumber was ordered Monday to stand trial on charges that he burned his ex-girlfriend alive in her car.

A San Fernando Superior Court judge ruled there was enough evidence to require Donald Lewis Brooks Jr., 34, to stand trial in the March 1999 killing of Lisa Kerr, 32.
