BRIEFLY; PAIR ARRESTED IN NIGHT EXPLOSION.


BURBANK - A man and a woman were arrested early Saturday after police said they blew up a ``destructive device'' in a dirt area by an apartment building, starting a small fire that alerted neighbors.

About 1 a.m., officers investigated a report of a loud explosion reported in the 200 block of West Elm West Elm is a retail chain that features contemporary furniture designs and other housewares. It is a subsidiary of Williams-Sonoma, Inc.. [1]

By the end of 2007, West Elm plans to have 28 store locations open in the United States.

Investigators said the pair detonated something between a mattress and a box spring, igniting the mattress.

 Glenn Joseph Poppler, 30, and Melissa Joanne Cargill, 30, both of Burbank, nearby, Latta said. In their apartment, officers said they found several components that could be used to make a bomb, but Latta did not have details.

The pair were booked on suspicion of using a destructive device A destructive device is a firearm or explosive device that, in the United States, is regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934. Examples of destructive devices are grenades, and firearms with a bore over one half of an inch, including some semi-automatic shotguns.  and possession of materials with intent to make destructive devices, Latta said. They were also arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, he said.

The suspects were being held on $1 million bail each.
