BRIEFLY; GUNMAN FORCES DRIVER TO GIVE RIDE.


SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - A 40-year-old man was robbed by a gunman who carjacked him from a local parking lot and forced him to drive to an area outside Simi Valley, police said Thursday.

Police said Brian Peary was getting into his car at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in a parking lot in the 500 block of Cochran Street when the suspect got in on the passenger side and ordered him to start driving. Peary told police that they stopped west of Simi Valley, near the Moorpark Freeway, where a two-door sedan pulled up and drove away with the suspect.

Peary was not injured, police said.

The carjacker was described only as a 30-year-old white man.

4 SUSPECTS HELD IN ALLEY STABBING

SIMI VALLEY - Two adults and two juveniles - all suspected of being gang members - have been arrested in the June 6 stabbing and beating of a local man who was attacked in an alley, police said Thursday.

Ernest Valencia, 25; Walter Fimbres, 18; a 16-year-old; and a 15-year-old were arrested Wednesday by officers with the Special Operations Operations conducted in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments to achieve military, diplomatic, informational, and/or economic objectives employing military capabilities for which there is no broad conventional force requirement.  Unit following a three-week investigation. Police also seized firearms and ammunition.

Valencia and Fimbres were being held in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $50,000 and $55,000 bail, respectively. The youths were being detained in Juvenile Hall.

FIRE HARMS CACHE OF ANTIQUE WARES

SIMI VALLEY - A fire was sparked by an electric hacksaw being used to create vent holes in a storage trailer, damaging $70,000 worth of antiques inside, officials said Thursday.

No injuries were reported in the Wednesday evening fire in the 8800 block of Stockton Road, officials said.

The furniture was being stored in the trailer while a home was being built for its owners, officials said.

EX-SCHOOL TRUSTEE ADMITS TO FELONY

VENTURA - Former Oxnard Elementary School elementary school: see school.  District Trustee Ray Gonzales faces six months in jail and five years' probation when he is sentenced next month for transporting cocaine and petty theft.

Gonzales, 42, resigned from his post nine days after his May 31 arrest by Oxnard police, who originally stopped him on a parole violation, then found 4 1/2 grams of cocaine when they searched his car.

Gonzales pleaded guilty Wednesday to the felony drug charge, as well as misdemeanor petty theft.

Gonzales' legal problems began in September, when he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor spousal battery and was placed on three years' probation.

The month before, he had been fired from his job as director of a Ventura County CalWORKS center in Oxnard by his supervisors, who cited poor performance.

AREA GETS GRANT IN CASE OF DISASTER

The Federal Emergency Management Agency The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is the federal agency responsible for coordinating emergency planning, preparedness, risk reduction, response, and recovery. The agency works closely with state and local governments by funding emergency programs and providing technical  has approved a $100,000 grant for the Las Virgenes/Malibu/Conejo Council of Governments to better help the area deal with disasters and emergencies, officials said Thursday.

Rep. Brad Sherman Bradley J. "Brad" Sherman (born October 24 1954) is an American politician. He has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1997, representing California's At-large congressional district. , D-Woodland Hills, announced the grant, which is drawn from FEMA's Project Impact, a funding program aimed at disaster- prone areas.

The funds will be used to expand and improve volunteer arson patrols in the local mountain area and disaster response teams that train residents about emergency preparedness.
