It was unclear just how the university would prevent students from illegally copying music.

SUIT FILED ON BEHALF OF RAMPART VICTIMS

Former federal prosecutors and an attorney who specializes in officer misconduct cases have filed a federal class-action lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department on behalf of alleged victims of a spiraling corruption scandal.

It's unclear, however, whether such a lawsuit will be allowed because the circumstances of the plaintiffs' cases vary widely. If ``settlement class'' status is granted, plaintiffs can refuse to participate and pursue their cases independently.

The alliance was formed between Stephen Yagman and the law firm O'Neill, Lysaght & Sun, whose three name partners are former federal prosecutors.

Yagman represents eight people who charge in federal lawsuits that officers involved in the Police Department's Rampart station corruption scandal violated their civil rights.

Yagman and the law firm filed the lawsuit Thursday.
