BRIEFLY; ANIMAL AID GROUP NEEDS VOLUNTEERS.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - More volunteers are needed to operate the Partners for Life program to save the lives of thousands of stray dogs and cats brought into city shelters, organizers said Monday.

The program will hold an orientation session Wednesday night for prospective volunteers at the East Valley Animal Shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.
.

While about 60 people signed up for the program when it started in the fall, many of them dropped out, said Kelly Dwyer, executive director of New Leash on Life, the rescue group helping the city run the program.

New Leash is seeking people to commit to four hours a week, with the heaviest needs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Volunteers will work at the East Valley Animal Shelter to try to find homes for animals and to educate people on their care so they are less likely to abandon adopted pets.

The volunteer orientation session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the East Valley Animal Shelter, 13131 Sherman Way, North Hollywood. For more information, call New Leash on Life at (818) 710-9898. The group is also hosting an adoption open house on Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the East Valley shelter.
