BRIEFLY: JOCKEY VALENZUELA TO TRY FOR COMEBACK.


Jockey Patrick Valenzuela, suspended nearly a dozen times during his 21-year career for a variety of infractions, told friends during a visit to Santa Anita last week that he hopes to make another comeback in February.

Last Feb. 12, the Santa Anita Board of Stewards suspended Valenzuela for seven months after he tested positive for amphetamines Amphetamines
Sympathomimetic amines; sometimes called speed; synthetic chemicals that stimulate the central nervous system.

) that Valenzuela not be re-licensed unless he maintained a full year of sobriety.

Valenzuela was given a conditional license in August, 1999, after a two- year absence stemming from previous infractions. Upon his return, Valenzuela was required to attend bi-weekly counseling sessions, submit to random drug testing and have no unexcused absences.

USA Gymnastics said Karolyi would not return to the job he held for just over a year. The decision was made during a women's program summit in Houston on Sunday.

Karolyi could not be reached immediately for comment.
