Italy's Mario Cipollini extended his overall race lead Monday with victory on the second stage of the Tour de France, a 163-mile journey from Saint-Valery-en-Caux to the Normandy town of Vire.

Cipollini beat Germany's Erik Zabel and Jeroen Blijlevens of the Netherlands in a sprint finish for his second win in as many days.

The 30-year-old sprint specialist, who won five stages in the recent Tour of Italy, is now 36 seconds ahead of Britain's Chris Boardman, with last year's runner-up Jan Ullrich of Germany two seconds back in third.

``I'm on top form right now,'' Cipollini - sporting an all-yellow outfit with yellow bike to match his leader's jersey - told reporters.

Switzerland's veteran Tony Rominger remains in fourth place overall following his strong showing in Saturday's prologue.

BASEBALL: Troy Glaus might sit out the summer after major-league officials rejected an agreement with the Angels, his adviser said.

Glaus, selected by the Angels with the third overall pick in the June draft, had agreed to sign for a minimum bonus amount now so he could start his career, according to adviser Doug DeCinces. As the top picks signed - the top four all are unsigned - the Angels would adjust Glaus' bonus to fit the emerging market value.

NBA: The New York Knicks gave coach Jeff Van Gundy a multiyear contract extension after he led the team to one of its best seasons.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: New USC women's basketball coach Chris Gobrecht has hired Erika Lang and Stacy McIntyre as his assistants. Lang, 26, was an assistant to Gobrecht at Florida State last season. McIntyre, also 26, was an assistant coach at Nevada for two years.

TRACK AND FIELD: The oldest record in track and field was equaled when Kenya-born Wilson Kipketer of Denmark ran 800 meters in 1 minute, 41.73 seconds at the DN Galan Grand Prix meet in Stockholm, Sweden.

Britain's Sebastian Coe first set the record in 1981.

Also, Carl Lewis, competing for the final time in Sweden, anchored the Santa Monica Track Club to an Olympic Stadium record of 38.32 in the 400 relay. And Marion Jones, the former Thousand Oaks High School star, won the 200 in 22.16, well ahead of second-place Cathy Freeman (22.68).

BOXING: Hector ``Macho'' Camacho predicted he'd knock out Oscar De La Hoya within four rounds when they meet on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas. De La Hoya countered by saying he'd stop Camacho in seven.

``That's my goal. Seven rounds,'' said De La Hoya, speaking at a news conference on the Santa Monica Pier that kicked off a four-day, nine-city tour to promote the fight.

TENNIS: Pete Sampras extended his lead at the top of the ATP world rankings after winning his fourth singles title at Wimbledon on Sunday.

The 25-year-old American beat unseeded Frenchman Cedric Pioline in straight sets to win the title, increasing his lead over second-placed Michael Chang from 965 points to 1,620 points. Sampras has 5,388 points to Chang's 3,768.

NHL: Detroit Red Wings team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov regained consciousness and started to communicate with family members by writing, hospital officials said.

Defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov, who was also injured in the June 13 limousine accident, has been taken off a ventilator and shows signs of gradually regaining consciousness, doctors said.
