Gov. Jesse Ventura will draw an unlikely crowd of TV viewers during his debut Saturday as a commentator for the XFL: Minnesota lawmakers. Lots of them.

And most will be focused on the governor's often unpredictable mouth, waiting for an inflammatory remark to slip out.

Rep. Phil Krinkie, a frequent Ventura critic, will be watching the New York/New Jersey Hitmen take on the Las Vegas Outlaws.

``I would not otherwise probably be watching the game, but because of the governor's involvement, I will be watching,'' he said. ``I'm concerned what kind of an image the governor is going to portray to the rest of the nation.''

Many have criticized Ventura's moonlighting in the past couple of years, but the issue has come to a boiling point over the XFL.

So far, the abbreviated list includes two books, a Broadway musical, a one-day return to the wrestling ring as a referee, regular appearances on the political talk-show circuit, a bit part in his favorite soap opera and an interview with Playboy magazine.

Now, his XFL deal will take him out of the state for 10 Saturday-night games beginning this weekend. Under his contract, he can miss games if state business demands his attention.

--USC received a commitment from cornerback/wide receiver David Boler of Charter Oak High in Covina. Boler had 20 interceptions in the last two seasons and selected USC over Colorado.

A late USC recruit, highly regarded linebacker Leon Williams of Brooklyn, New York, visited with Trojans coaches on Wednesday but has decided to honor his commitment to Miami.

BASEBALL: The Dodgers have established a working agreement with a baseball team in Parma, Italy.

--Dodgers third baseman Adrian Beltre was admitted into Centinela Hospital Medical Center on Wednesday as part of the aftercare from his emergency appendectomy, but he's expected to be ready for the start of spring training in three weeks.

Beltre, 21, underwent emergency surgery in his native Dominican Republic last month. The visit was scheduled so the Dodgers' team doctors could monitor his recovery.

``Adrian was flown back so the medical staff could monitor him during his recovery,'' Dodgers spokesperson John Olguin said. ``At this point, we see no reason why he wouldn't be ready for spring training.''

VOLLEYBALL: Burt Fuller, who spent the last seven seasons as an assistant at national power UCLA, was hired as the women's volleyball coach at Utah State.

With Fuller, 41, on the staff, UCLA's women reached the NCAA tournament six times, including a national runner-up finish in 1994. The Bruins made the national quarterfinals the past two seasons.
