Herb Scannell W. Herb Scannell, born January 11, 1957 in Long Island, New York of Puerto Rican descent, is CEO of Next New Networks and former President of Nickelodeon Networks and Vice-Chairman of Viacom's MTV Networks. , the new president of Nickelodeon, the children's cable channel owned by Viacom Inc., said Wednesday that the network would develop original programs for Saturday mornings. That is a break from its pattern of introducing new shows at times when the other networks do not program for children, mainly Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Prompting the move, he said, is Nickelodeon's strong performance on Saturday mornings this season with a schedule of repeats, albeit of popular shows like ``Doug,'' ``Rugrats'' and ``Rocko's Modern Life Rocko's Modern Life is an American animated television series created by Joe Murray whose four seasons aired from 1993 to 1996. ``A week or two after the new network shows had launched last fall, I got word from Howard that we were beating CBS and ABC, even with their new shows on,'' Scannell said, referring to Howard Schimmel Schimmel is a German surname and may refer to:

The trend kept up. For the season to date, Nickelodeon is averaging a 3.8 Nielsen rating on Saturday mornings among all children 2 to 11, second only to Fox (4.8) and ahead of ABC (2.8), CBS (2.6).

Those are national ratings; each rating point represents 959,000 households. Cable television is available in only about two-thirds of those households, so Nickelodeon is competitive with the broadcasters even though the broadcasters have access to half again as many households.
