BRIEFCASE.Byline: -- Daily News wire services Medicare open enrollment starts Beginning today, seniors will have six weeks to switch Medicare drug plans or sign up for coverage for the first time. It's the second open enrollment for the drug plans since the benefit's passage by Congress, and Medicare officials expect it to be quieter than the initial one a year ago. More than 39 million of Medicare's 43 million beneficiaries now have prescription coverage, but some will use the next six weeks to change to another plan that better fits their drug needs or pocketbook. Though this year's enrollment period runs until Dec. 31, Medicare officials say seniors should try to switch plans by Dec. 8 to give insurers enough time to process applications before coverage begins Jan 1. Seniors may sign up for a plan by calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227, or visiting Medicare's Web site at www.medicare.gov.
