Bernanke pledges his best at the Fed

WASHINGTON - New Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke vowed Monday to do his best to carry out the central bank's mission of fighting inflation, fostering economic growth and nurturing a healthy jobs climate.

``Our mission as set forth by the Congress is a critical one,'' Bernanke said Monday at his ceremonial swearing-in at the Fed's headquarters.

Bernanke's first day on the job was last Wednesday.

WOODLAND HILLS - Western Commercial Bank is now open for business, the commercial real estate lender announced Monday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Fast-food giant Yum Brands Inc. said Monday that its fourth-quarter profit fell 4 percent, stemming from an accounting expense for employee stock options even as the company posted double-digit gains in its U.S. and some of its overseas operations.

Operating profits were off sharply in Yum's fast-growing China division, which the company blamed on worries about avian flu avian flu: see influenza. .
