California homes less affordable

California households fell $60,380 short of the qualifying income to buy a median-priced home in the first quarter, the state Association of Realtors reported Tuesday.

The median price for a home in the state in the quarter was $488,600, which requires a household income of $113,920 to qualify for standard loans, the group said. But the state's household median income was only $53,540.

``These numbers are particularly troubling for would-be first-time home buyers, who often are locked out of homeownership because of the lack of affordable homes for sale,'' said association President Jim Hamilton James Hamilton (born February 9, 1976) is an experienced Scottish football striker, having played for eight senior clubs in his career.
