Temps demand expected to soar

Demand for temporary workers in the second quarter of 2005 is expected to jump 10.4 percent over the same period in 2004, according to according to

``An increase in temporary hiring has historically preceded increased demand for full-time hiring by six to nine months,'' said Greg Palmer, president and chief executive officer of RemedyTemp.

``Gross domestic product continues its strong growth and unemployment is holding steady,'' he said. ``These factors have helped drive temporary staffing to robust levels not seen since the first quarter of 2001.''

SAN FRANCISCO - Discount brokerage pioneer Charles Schwab Corp. sued TD Waterhouse Group Inc. on Monday, alleging that its rival's advertisements falsely labeled Schwab as a high-priced firm with inferior service.

The trade libel complaint filed in state court underscores Schwab's determination to reclaim its reputation as a bargain brokerage.

T-bills' interest rates reach a high

WASHINGTON - Interest rates on short-term Treasury bills rose in Monday's auction to the highest levels in 3 1/2 years.

The Treasury Department auctioned $20 billion in three-month bills at a discount rate of 2.735 percent, up from 2.710 percent last week. An additional $18 billion in six-month bills was auctioned at a discount rate of 3.000 percent, up from 2.935 percent last week.

The three-month rate was the highest since three-month bills averaged 3.180 percent on Sept. 10, 2001. The six-month rate was the highest since 3.120 percent on Sept. 10, 2001.

Enron's founder wants two juries

HOUSTON - Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay wants different juries for his two upcoming trials.

The legal team for the former head of the disgraced energy company told U.S. District Judge Sim Lake in a court filing Monday that it doesn't want the same jury that decides the outcome of the January fraud and conspiracy trial of Lay, former Enron CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Jeffrey Skilling and former top accountant Richard Causey to hear a separate case pending against Lay that involves personal banking charges.

Halliburton costs raising questions

WASHINGTON - Pentagon auditors questioned more than $108 million in costs claimed by Halliburton on its $875 million contract to provide fuel in Iraq in 2003 and 2004, according to records released Monday.
