Health Net to add more members

WOODLAND HILLS - Health Net Inc. said Thursday that it will add more than 100,000 members to its California coverage by acquiring the health plan assets of UniversalCare Inc.

Terms were not announced, but the deal will bring in 75,000 commercial members, 20,000 Medi-Cal and Healthy Families members, and 5,000 Medicare Advantage beneficiaries to Health Net of California's 700,000 current members.

Additionally, Health Net will have the opportunity to enroll an additional 20,000 Medi-Cal and Healthy Families beneficiaries in Orange County. The deal should close in the first half of this year.

30-year mortgage rates drop slightly

WASHINGTON - Rates on 30-year mortgages dipped this week, although it was a mixed bag for rates on other home loans.

Mortgage giant Freddie Mac Freddie Mac: see Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation.  reported Thursday in its weekly survey that rates on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages dropped to 6.21 percent for the week ending today.

That was down slightly from last week's average rate of 6.22 percent and was the lowest since late October.

Rates on 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages, a popular choice for refinancing a home mortgage, averaged 5.76 percent this week, unchanged from last week.

One-year adjustable-rate mortgages, however, edged up to 5.16 percent this week, compared with 5.15 percent last week.

DirecTV to offer early downloads

LAS VEGAS - In a further erosion of the decades-old model for distributing TV shows, DirecTV subscribers will be able to pay to download some Fox Entertainment Group programs to their digital video recorders up to two days before traditional broadcasts.

Under a deal announced Thursday, fans of the FX series ``The Shield,'' ``Rescue Me,'' ``It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'' and ``30 Days'' will be able to pay $2.99 for early, on-demand access, provided they have DirecTV's latest DVR (1) (Digital Video Recorder) A device that records video onto a hard disk from one or more ceiling mounted video cameras. Part of a security system, the DVR typically supports 4, 8 or 16 separate camera channels. .
