GOLDEN, Colo. - Adolph Coors Adolph Herman Joseph Coors, Sr. (February 4, 1847 – June 5, 1929) was a brewer who started the Adolph Coors Company in Golden, Colorado in 1873. Early years  Co. said Monday that it will acquire the British brewer Carling in a $1.75 billion deal that company officials said would help America's No. 3 brewer gain ground overseas.

As packaged-goods businesses around the world continue a rapid trend of consolidation, Coors realized that the bulk of its business was based on products from Colorado and it needed to diversify, Rod Klugman, senior vice president for development, said in an interview.

Ruling on Clarinex is mixed success

NEW YORK - The Food and Drug Administration gave Schering-Plough Corp. an early Christmas present last week when it finally approved its second-generation allergy medication Clarinex after a year. But whether it is a gift that keeps on giving remains a matter of debate.

Clarinex is the successor drug to Claritin, Schering's top-selling drug. Claritin sales reached $3 billion last year, nearly one-third of Schering's revenues of $9.18 billion.

However, 18 generic drug generic drug, a drug sold or prescribed under the nonproprietary name of its active ingredients or under a generally descriptive name rather than under a brand or trade name.  companies are challenging Claritin's patents in a court case that is expected to begin early next year in federal court in Newark, N.J. Most analysts expect Claritin to lose market exclusivity next December when its basic patent expires.

That presents a major problem for Schering-Plough because analysts say Clarinex is only marginally better than its predecessor, so doctors are more likely to prescribe generic Claritin for patients because the cost will be at least 50 percent less.
