Gas prices lower, supply abundant

Motorists who have experienced two consecutive weeks of moderate price declines at the pump should see continued lower prices as local and national suppliers seek stability after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Automobile Club of Southern California and the American Automobile Association join with U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham in pointing to abundant supplies of crude oil and refined gasoline.

< Nasdaq suspends some requisites

NEW YORK - The Nasdaq Stock Market has temporarily suspended certain trading requirements to help companies remain listed on the exchange and to ease the economic turmoil following this month's terrorist attacks.

The stock market, which lists more than 4,300 companies, said Thursday that the moratorium is effective until Jan. 2, 2002.

The move exempts companies from meeting minimum share price and public float requirements to stay listed on the exchange. Float refers to the number of outstanding shares available for trading by the public.

The Nasdaq does not release the number of companies that face delisting, he said.

A company's shares must trade above a minimum price, usually $1, to stay listed on the Nasdaq. The minimum value of a public float of a company's shares varies.

< AT&T may merge with BellSouth

NEW YORK - Long-distance giant AT&T Corp. is talking to BellSouth Corp. about a possible merger, a move that could reunite it with one of the Baby Bells it was forced to spin off back in 1984, a source close to the negotiations said Thursday.

Any such deal would take place only after AT&T sells its cable business, AT&T Broadband, and involve only its consumer and business telecom divisions said the source, who would speak only on condition of anonymity.

AT&T, eager to take part in any upcoming consolidation of the telecommunications industry, has also made similar overtures to other, unidentified telephone companies, the source said.
