GE workers strike over health costs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Thousands of General Electric Co. workers went on strike Tuesday to protest higher out-of-pocket health costs, even as they mourned the death of a picket struck by a police car.

The two-day strike - the first national walkout at GE since 1969 - officially began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday at plants that manufacture everything from consumer appliances to jet engines.

But just hours later, Kjeston ``Michelle'' Rodgers, 40, was hit outside a GE plant in Louisville as the eight-year employee walked with a picket sign before daybreak. The car was from the police department in nearby Hollow Creek, officials said.

Travelers takes major loss in Q4

HARTFORD, Conn. - Travelers Property Casualty Corp. said Tuesday it would charge $1.3 billion against earnings after taxes in the fourth quarter to strengthen its reserves for asbestos claims.
